仲尼不為己甚 Zhongni refrained from going to the extreme
仲尼不為己甚
「仲尼不為己甚」，豈僅防矯枉過直哉？聖人之所慮遠也。老子曰：「民不畏死，奈何以死畏之。」夫民未嘗不畏死，至知必死乃不畏，至不畏死則無事不可為矣。小時聞某大姓為盜劫，懸賞格購捕。半歲餘，悉就執，亦俱引伏。而大姓恨盜甚，以多金賂獄卒，百計苦之。至足不躡地，脅不到席，束縛不使如廁，褲中蛆蟲蠕蠕嘬股髀，惟不絕飲食，使勿速死而已。盜恨大姓甚，私計強劫得財，律不分首從斬；輪姦婦女，律亦不分首從斬。二罪從一科斷，均歸一斬，萬無加至磔裂理。乃於庭鞫時，自供遍污其婦女，官雖不據以錄供，而眾口堅執，眾耳共聞，迄不能滅此語。不善大姓者又從而附會，謂：「盜已論死，足蔽罪。而不惜多金，又百計苦之，其銜恨次骨正以此。」人言籍籍，亦無從而辨此疑，遂大為門戶玷，悔已無及。夫劫盜駢戮，不能怨主人；即拷掠追訊，桎梏幽繫，亦不能怨主人。法所應受也。至虐以法外，則其志不甘。擲石擊石，力過猛必激而反。取一時之快，受百世之污，豈非已甚之故乎？然則聖人之所慮遠矣。

In a corpus of ca. 3100 stories from the strange tales collections Zibuyu, Xu Zibuyu, Yuewei caotangbiji, Liaozhai zhiyi, Yetan suilu, Ershilu and Xieduo an LDA-based topic modeling algorithm was asked to identify exactly 50 topics. The algorithm calculated the probability of each of the 50 topics to appeaer in each of the stories. Below are given the Top 5 topics in decending order of their probabilities for the story above.
