“長山袁翁，少極貧，居城外一破屋中，幾於行乞。一日窘甚，饑虛已數日矣，無如何，檢點破衣襦數事，至典肆欲質錢若干。肆主曰：「此等物不值一文，可持去。」翁太息曰：「我非濫為者，特以饑不得食，稱貸無路，乞食不能，故萬不獲已，以此為質，不過聊以為信，得錢則取贖耳。幸念素識之情，用質數十百文，以延殘喘也。」肆主以為笑談，置不理，翁憤然曰：「恨我一時在困苦中耳。苟有日發跡，誓亦開一解庫，彼時雖有人將死孩兒來質，亦必質之矣！」店肆最忌質死孩兒之說，聞之頗不甘，第以其貧窶至極，不足與較，故為隱忍。
翁歸去，一路冥想，毫無生趣，乃止步向天號泣曰：「嗚呼！袁某自問於心，所行之事，無不可告人者，胡為而竟至於此耶？」良久輟泣，復行。忽破衣為棘刺所牽，猝難擺脫，屈身摘之。覺棘下土甚鬆，試抄以手，土中有物累累然，白光燦鑠，取視二枚，則朱提也。大驚喜，即以破衣裹數錠，仍以土密掩其餘者以歸。次晚，復往取之，多不勝取。數旬方盡，約略二萬金，不敢彰露，先作些小生意，逐漸張大。一年之後，遂為巨賈。問舍求田，買僮蓄婢，故於宅旁開一典肆。
前肆主聞之，訝曰：「袁餓鬼果有今日耶？昔者受其惡言惡聲，每一念及，心實不甘。今趁其發市之始，盍一往，故犯其忌，聊申夙忿乎？」乃覓二死孩，裹以襁褓，挾至其市，求質銀十兩。主櫃者大怒，勢將用武，翁適在側，急止之，而拱手向肆主曰：「老兄欲證成我為信人耶？此孩之死，正值小肆開市之日，不為無緣，請如數質之。」因使人賈一小棺，殮孩於內：「此孩不必遠送，即我所立地磚下瘞之可也。」急呼僮僕執鍤，就腳下掘一穴，才尺餘，忽得一石板，發之，板下列巨甕十數，甕中白鏹皆滿，一肆大驚。肆主見之感歎，始知翁長者，天固有以默啟之也。再拜謝罪而去。
翁自此富甲一縣，已而生子，子生孫，皆能讀書上達，有仕至尚書者、督撫者、卿貳者，科甲連綿，迄今正當鼎盛也。”

In a corpus of ca. 3100 stories from the strange tales collections Zibuyu, Xu Zibuyu, Yuewei caotangbiji, Liaozhai zhiyi, Yetan suilu, Ershilu and Xieduo an LDA-based topic modeling algorithm was asked to identify exactly 50 topics. The algorithm calculated the probability of each of the 50 topics to appeaer in each of the stories. Below are given the Top 5 topics in decending order of their probabilities for the story above. Probabilities are indicated with percentage numbers.
